Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is a national test for mature age people designed to assess aptitude for learning in a tertiary environment. It is recognized in all Australian states and is designed to assess competencies commonly considered important for success in tertiary study.
A score of 145 in the Written English component and a score of 115 in the Multiple Choice component of the STAT fulfils minimum admission requirements into ECU.
Applicants who achieve a 125 in the Written English component and a score of 125 in the Multiple Choice component may be eligible to for entry into the University Preparation Course.
Please note - some courses have special admission requirements which applicants must fulfil in addition to meeting minimum admission requirements. If the course has a mathematics or science prerequisite a score of 145 in the Multiple Choice component is required. If the course has eligibility score of higher than 55.00 then higher marks in the Multiple Choice component are required.
You can search for courses, check admission requirements and course information using our Course and Career Finder.
Who is eligible to sit the stat?
Anyone who is 20 years of age before 1 March in the year in which they wish to commence studies is eligible.
What does the STAT involve?
There are two sections:
- STAT Multiple Choice
An aptitude test that assesses both verbal and quantitative skills. It is a 2 hour test with 70 multiple choice questions, half of which are Humanities and Social Sciences based, and the other half are Mathematics and Science based.
- Written English
A one hour test in which the candidate is asked to write short essays on two different topics: Part A is a public affairs issue that invites argument, while Part B asks for a more personal point of view. Each section gives a choice of four topics.
How to I prepare?
You should be able to sit the tests by simply familiarising yourself with the booklets containing sample questions that they receive at the time they book for the STAT.
If you have not recently been involved in formal study or did not complete your secondary education, you may want to consider completing a STAT preparation course in order to approach the STAT with confidence. A number of institutions offer STAT Preparation Courses either throughout the year or at peak times of demand for the STAT.
